Apostolic dating standards: a guide to godly courtship
Many Pentecostal singles ask what the "rules" for dating are. Most are not a checklist—they are ways to honor God, protect each other, and move toward marriage with wisdom.
Standards differ between churches and organizations, and your pastor is the best guide for your local practice. Below are principles commonly shared among Oneness Apostolic believers, and questions to discuss as you get to know someone.
1. Date with marriage in mind
Courtship is intentional. Rather than dating casually, many Apostolic singles only pursue a relationship with someone they could see themselves marrying. Be honest early about your intentions so neither person invests their heart under false expectations.
2. Keep purity and accountability
Avoid situations that invite temptation: long times alone, late nights, and private settings. Group activities, church events, and meeting in public places help a relationship grow without pressure. Accountability with a trusted friend or leader is a blessing, not a burden.
3. Involve your pastor and family
Many churches encourage singles to seek pastoral counsel before and during a courtship. Introducing the person to your pastor and family early brings wisdom, prayer, and protection to the relationship.
4. Share convictions on holiness and modesty
Outward holiness standards—such as dress, jewelry, hair, and entertainment—can look different from one assembly to another. Talk about them openly. It is wiser to find someone who already shares your convictions than to hope a person will change.
5. Talk about faith and calling
Ask about their salvation experience, church life, and sense of calling. A future in missions, evangelism, or pastoral ministry shapes a household. Our article on shared convictions and ministry callings covers this in depth.
6. Meeting online safely
- Keep early conversations on the platform before sharing personal contact details.
- Never send money to someone you have not met.
- Meet first in a public place or at church, and tell someone you trust.
- Report profiles that pressure you or seem dishonest.
